"Akragas" was founded in 581 BC by Greek colonists already settled in Gela.
As the enchanting and notorious Valley of the temples testifies today, Akragas became soon one of the most important cities of Magna Graecia; this is currently the Italian territory with more remains of Greek colonization still open.
The Romans settled in 210 BC, naming of the town "Agrigentum".
With the arab domination, in 829 AD, Agrigentum becomes "Kerkent", from which later "Girgenti"; it was rebuilt on the hill of the city, and here today the historical center extends with a typical Arabic conformation.
Other evident Islamic traces can now be found in the customs and traditions of the inhabitants.
Aince 1927 the name of the town became Agrigento Italianizing its Latin name.
