Alicudi is the westernmost island in the Aeolian archipelago, and as well as Filicudi, it is one of the oldest.
The island is far from mass tourism, and still retains a totally natural and wild charm.
The only means of transport are the donkeys, which climb up the lava stone steps.
On the island grows a florid vegetation of Erica; this gave the ancient name of Ericusa.
Remains of prehistoric, Hellenistic and Roman pottery have been found.
In the natural fort "Timpone delle femmine" women were hidden to defend them from raids by pirates.
The only inhabited center is Alicudi Porto, where approximately 140 inhabitants live on fishing.
