The church of St Sebastiano is an absolute must for those visiting Acireale.
Beautiful both inside and outside, it was built between 1609 and 1644 and assumed its present appearance with the restoration following the earthquake of 1693.
The façade, among the most beautiful of Sicilian baroque, was designed by Angelo Bellofiore, and has inlays by Diego and Giovanni Flavetta.
The church has a balustrade made in 1754 by Giovan Battista Marini and designed by Pietro Paolo Vasta, enriched by statues depicting characters from the Old Testament.
The interior, with a beautiful marble floor, is rich in frescoes and paintings by Pietro Paolo Vasta, made between 1732 and 1736.
In the rooms adjacent to the sacristy you can visit the museum, which preserves valuable works of Sicilian manufacture, beyond to ex voto offered to St Sebastiano and the reliquaries of the Saint and precious sacred vessels, including a monstrance in solid gold with diamonds and some sacred vestments with rich gold embroidery.
The crypt is used as a conference and concert hall, and there are some particularly valuable paintings and wooden statues.
The museum is open from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm, and from 4:00 pm to 7:30 pm, with an entrance fee of one euro.
