Giovanni Verga, novelist and storyteller is one of the major representatives of Italian realism or naturalism, considered together with Luigi Capuana the master of verism.
The most significant works of the realist season belong to him, not always easy to understand for the readers of the time.
His birthplace on 11 January 1940 was declared a national monument.
The apartment, used as a museum, is located on the second floor of a building in the historical center of Catania, where Verga spent his childhood and later lived for many years with his family.
The building was sold to the region that restored it and turned it into a literary museum.
The interiors are still the original ones and there are kept the furnishings and books that belonged to Giovanni Verga.
There are over 2600 volumes and reproductions of manuscripts whose originals can be found at the Regional University Library of Catania.
After the disappearance of the writer, what remained of his passion for photography was also found: photos depicting faces familiar to the writer.
The house consists of the entrance, a living room, a library, a bedroom, other rooms used as bedrooms, sitting rooms and hallways.
On the walls there are some engravings, among which two are by Francesco Di Bartolo.
In one wall of the dining room there is a painting by Calcedonio Reina.
