The medieval Colombaia castle rises on the Colombaia island.
It has four floors, and reaches a height of 32 meters.
The actual building is composed of an octagonal tower, and is one of the best examples of military architecture in Sicily.
Initially in its place there was a fortification dating back to the time of the Punic War, which was later used as a lighthouse by the Arabs.
In the Aragonese period the fortress was rebuilt with the current octagonal tower; in the XIII century it was enlarged, and further enlargements took place in the XVII century.
It was turned into a prison by the Bourbons and maintained this role until 1965.
Only in 2014 the castle was declared a cultural asset and passed from the State Property Office to the Sicily Region, which began its restoration.
