34 meters high, the Norman castle of Adrano is the symbol of the town.
It was built in 1072, together with the castles of Motta S.Anastasia and Paternò, commissioned by the Gran Conte Ruggero I of Sicily.
It is a beautiful parallelepiped tower in perfect Norman style.
The castle has been the residence of important Sicilian families: Pellegrino, Sclafani, Moncada.
The fortress ended up being a noble residence in the seventeenth century; at that time the ceilings of the highest floors had already collapsed and the decline of the building began.
It was used as a prison until 1958.
Later, thanks to a careful restoration, it was reborn as an archaeological museum, and today it also houses the Contemporary Art Gallery, the Picture Gallery, the Craft Museum and the Historical Archive.
Opening hours: Tuesday to Saturday 9:00 am - 7:00 pm Sunday and holidays 9:00 am - 1:30 pm closed on Mondays.
Single ticket Museum of Adrano and Archaeological Area of the Dionysian Walls € 4.00 full price, € 2.00 reduced.
