The castle of Brolo was built in the swabian period in the place where at the time of the normans there was a tower called with the arabic name of "Voab", that is "Marine Fortress", on a hill overlooking the sea.
The Lancia family lived there and probably the son of Emperor Frederick II and Bianca Lancia was born there: king Manfredi.
Even today the Lancia heraldic emblem can be distinguished on two entrance doors.
The attention of those arriving at the Castle is immediately taken by the ghibelline battlement with the dovetail profile.
From the tower you reach the terrace: beautiful balcony on the Aeolian islands.
In 1600 the castle underwent a remarkable rehash and had an important and strategic commercial role between the port and the internal area of the Nebrodis.
About the ancient splendor of this fortress remain the curtain wall, the two portals and a courtyard arranged as a garden with an elegant hexagonal well, all surmounted by the massive tower; a spiral staircase connects the floors.
The tower rises for four levels, culminating in the embattled terrace.
The first three floors are characterized by unique environments.
On the second floor there is a beautiful reception room and a door that leads to a monumental panoramic balcony.
The famous balcony is also linked to ancient legends, like that of Maria La Bella, probably Maria Lancia.
It is said that a beautiful princess appeared from the balcony of the castle to wait for her lover to come from the sea; the suitor, once he reached the tower, clung to the long tresses of his beloved to reach her in secret.
One day the brother of the princess noticed this and ambushed the young lover: one night he waited for him on the rock in front of the castle, wounded him to death and threw him at sea closed in a sack.
The beautiful Maria waited for the beloved until she died.
The princess would still appear in the night to wish a good fishing or to warn the fishermen of the bad weather.
The castle of Brolo houses the Museum of Coastal Fortifications of Sicily and the Historical Museum of Penalty and Torture.
