The castle of Collesano was built by Countess Adelasia in the first decades of 1100, a period of Norman domination of Sicily.
It has a quadrangular plan with internal court incorporated within four corner towers and walls up to 2 meters thick.
It belonged to the great feudal and aristocratic families of mainly Spanish origin.
At the end of the 16th century it was transformed into a residential building.
It was destroyed because of the earthquake of 11 January 1693 and, after being still inhabited in the 18th century, it was used as a prison until 1819, when a further earthquake rendered the structure completely uninhabitable.
Today the castle is unusable and only the ruins remain visible.
Today we discover...
Grifeo Castle of Partanna
One of the best preserved western Sicilian castles
