The Castle of Solanto was built in the twelfth century for the protection of the adjacent tonnara; it had a quadrangular central tower and some bastions.
It had several owners, including Manfredo Layhabixa, Francesco de Casaya in 1392, Corrado Spadafora in 1415, the Alliata family in 1517.
In the eighteenth century the castle was now reduced to a ruin, and in the last century, with the last restoration, it lost its medieval characteristics with the Gothic style building that currently surrounds it.
At the beginning of the nineteenth century an area of the castle, now called Palazzo Reale, hosted King Ferdinando di Borbone in exile.
Currently the castle is privately owned.
