Today only the majestic ruins of the Assoro castle remain in a magnificent panoramic position at 900 meters above sea level.
Built in the first half of 1200, it was a fortified complex of buildings defended by four towers, of which only one remains.
It has an irregular plan, which follows the line of the rock on which it stands, and in which there was another very ancient fortification before.
The upper floors were intended for the accommodation of the various lords, including the brothers Vitale and Simone, Barons of Valguarnera, whose families lived in the castle until 1492, when they moved to the Palazzo della Signoria.
Since then began the decline of the castle, which was abandoned.
Today you can see a large curtain wall with a circular tower, a second curtain with windows looking downstream, an underground passageway equipped with a helical staircase carved into the rock, and other rooms dug into the rock with a cross vault: probably stores.
In the rocks below, next to the holes for the beams, you can see long series of linear incisions whose interpretation is still unknown.
The castle is always open.
