The Eurialo castle is one of the main monuments of the Greek era of Syracuse.
This is one of the most important fortification works built in the classical era which has survived until today.
From the Epipoli plateau, on which stands the fortification, you can enjoy a beautiful view towards the bay of the port of Syracuse.
You can explore towers, ditches and underground corridors that still remain of the monument.
The Eurialo castle has an area of about 15,000 square meters, equipped with large moats, watch towers, a drawbridge and underground trenches, which made Syracuse impregnable due to the fact that this was the only point where you could attack to conquer the town, because it was defended by 27 km long walls.
It was not a castle used as a dwelling but a real fortress to defend the town.
The fortress was built according to the most ingenious discoveries of military technology and was practically impregnable, in fact it was never taken in its centuries-old history.
The entrance to the Castle is protected by three large ditches.
The keep, trapezoidal in shape, was defended by five large towers.
Beyond the keep there is a large enclosure where there was the entrance to the castle on a 5 m often wall; to the north is barred by a wall, to the south there are 3 large pillars that supported the drawbridge.
On the other side of the castle, the defensive system consisted of two walls placed in front of the access doors, which prevented the enemy's mass attacks.
Inside the castle, a lot of galleries still existing today gave the opportunity to move troops from one point to another of the fortress without being seen, in order to encircle the enemy.
The entire building has strategic elements that were used to catch any attackers by surprise, as, for example, beyond the intricate succession of galleries, the "door to invitation", where those who tried to enter would be surrounded by the castle soldiers.
The Eurialo castle is open every day from 9:00 am until an hour before sunset.
