Don't miss a visit to the Enchanted Castle of Filippo Bentivegna.
Actually it is not a castle, but a magical place where all the creative imagination of this self-taught sculptor, suffering from psychic problems, created a garden filled with thousands of faces carved in rock and trees.
Many adjectives could be attributed to this place: extravagant, surreal, mysterious, bizarre, suggestive, certainly singular.
Filippo Bentivegna from 1913 for over 50 years devoted himself to the construction of his enchanted place until his death in 1967.
To sculpt the faces he used all the boulders on the farm, and when these were scarce, he began to dig tunnels that he used as a stone quarries; still visitable and very suggestive.
The myriad faces, in the imagination of Bentivegna, named "Filippu di li testi" or even "Il pazzo di Sciacca" (the mad of Sciacca), represented the subjects of the kingdom he had created and of which he was the lord.
The year after the death of Filippo Bentivegna it happened that Jean Dubuffet, theorist of Art Brut, recognized the artistic importance of the enchanted castle, so the site was restructured and opened to the public.
This place has also been the subject of critical studies as a significant work of the twentieth century, and even today some heads of Bentivegna are exhibited at the Art Brut museum in Lausanne.
Crazy or artist, Filippo Bentivegna was able to create a unique place in the world.
The Enchanted Castle is open every day from 9:30 am to 6:30 pm in winter, and until 8:00 pm in summer.
It can be visited in about 60 minutes.
Entrance ticket 3 euros.
