Not far away from the famous Alcantara gorges rises the Cuba of St Domenica.
Its construction date is uncertain, for a long time it was believed to be from the Byzantine period, more accurate research would make it go back instead to the Arab-Norman period.
It is a Latin cross church declared a national monument because of its antiquity and beauty.
It has a dome and three apses.
Inside it was rich in frescoes that are unfortunately lost today.
The historical data on Cuba are very scarce.
The excavations have brought to light skeletons that would suggest the presence of an adjacent cemetery.
One of the mysteries of this church, in addition to the rather isolated location near the Alcantara river, are the extremely small dimensions, such as to accommodate few people praying; probably its construction coincided with a period of progressive decline of the Christian communities in Sicily.
Usually the church is kept closed.
