Gift of the Sicily Region to the city of Catania to honor the writer Giovanni Verga, this fountain is placed at the center of the largest and most modern square of Catania: Piazza Giovanni Verga.
It is an admirable work of the sculptor Carmelo Mendola; depicts the second dramatic shipwreck of the "Provvidenza", the boat of Malavoglia family of the romance "I Malavoglia".
The artist grasped the tension and the action, faithfully to what Verga described in the corresponding passage of the romance.
Forty-seven jets of water, with eighty reflectors of white and golden light, symbolize the storm in a dynamic and suggestive way, with great scenographic effect due to their arrangement.
