Probably built by the Arabs around the year 830 to defend the nascent Arab town of Zabut, today's Sambuca di Sicilia, this ancient castle was still in a good state of conservation until the 1950s, when it was decided to build the Carboj dam.
Since then the waters of the Arancio lake cover the castle for about six months a year, at the end of which the castle re-emerges.
The castle has a quadrangular plan, with circular towers at the corners.
These are covered by a limestone dome which in ancient times had an ornament in the shape of a flame or crescent.
The towers are also equipped with loopholes, and currently the height of the walls reaches about 4 meters.
In recent years, with the gradual lowering of the lake waters, in addition to the towers, the fortified walls have also re-emerged.
Unfortunately, thermal excursions and hydro-geological depressions seriously compromise the stability of the castle, and recently the administrations have reactivated for the recovery and usability of the castle.
