Throughout Sicily you can admire the works of Giovan Francesco Pintorno, a religious belonging to the Order of the Franciscans, known for his sculptures of wooden crucifixes.
He was born in Petralia Soprana in 1600 and learned the art of sculpture probably from his father.
He took the vows in 1623 and was given the name of Friar Umile.
He founded a school in Palermo in the convent of St.Antonio, where he died on 9 February 1639 because of an illness, and where he is buried.
His crucifixes represent a personal meditation on the passion of Christ, a contemplation of pain.
