Gangi is one of the most beautiful countries in Italy; it has been proclaimed "Borgo dei borghi 2014".
It was built in the 12th century at 1,050 meters above sea level and has preserved a medieval structure.
In the Middle Ages it was surrounded by high walls with defense towers.
From the 13th century it belonged to the powerful Ventimiglia family, who built the castle and the tower; this square tower is today the bell tower of the Mother Church and is one of the most characteristic elements of the town.
It also belonged to the Graffeo family, who were the Princes of Gangi until 1625; then it passed to the Valguarnera, who retained the title until the nineteenth century.
In Gangi, around 1500, the painters Giuseppe Salerno and Gaspare Vazzano were born, both known as "the Zoppo di Gangi", which are points of reference for the Sicilian art.
Even today in most of Sicily you can admire the beautiful paintings and frescoes of these artists.
Walking through the streets of Gangi there are also some beautiful eighteenth-century palaces, including Palazzo Bongiorno, Palazzo Sgadari and Palazzo Mocciaro.
Also in the eighteenth century Gangi also boasts the birth of numerous academies of writers, among which the best known is that of the Industriosi, linked to Freemasonry.
