Giovanni Verga is considered the greatest exponent of the literary current called verism.
He was born in Catania, or perhaps in Vizzini, on September 2, 1840.
He had considerable success with the novel "Storia di una capinera".
In 1872, when he moved to Milan, he produced most of his masterpieces: Vita dei campi, i Malavoglia, Novelle rusticane and Mastro Don Gesualdo.
In 1893 he returned to Catania, and here he lived in solitude the last twenty years of his life.
Verga was abilie to describe the daily realities of Sicilian.
He described reality in its naked and painful essence.
Giovanni Verga died on January 27, 1922; his tomb is located in the Avenue of Illustrious Men in the cemetery of Catania.
