Ruggero D'Altavilla was born in1031 in Hauteville-la-Guichard, a Normandy village.

He came in Italy with his brother Roberto the Guiscardo and conquered Puglia and Calabria.

Established its court in Mileto, Calabria.

In 1061 landed in Messina and advanced to Castrogiovanni (the current Enna) and Girgenti (the current Agrigento).

In 1071 he was named Grand Count of Sicily by his brother Roberto il Guiscardo.

In the space of thirty years a series of clashes followed with the Saracens who led to the Norman conquest of the whole of Sicily.

Famous are the clashes for the conquest of Troina, which Ruggero chose as the first Norman capital; the battle of Cerami, the incredible victory of Misilmeri against an army much more numerous than his own, and the battle for Palermo.

Noto was the last town that surrendered to the Normans, in 1091.

Also conquered Malta, the Gran Conte died in Mileto on 22 June 1101.

He was buried in the Abbey of the Holy Trinity in a Roman sarcophagus which is currently located in the Archaeological Museum of Naples.

He was a skilled leader and diplomat.

During his life he built numerous castles, magnificent churches, towers and abbeys.

Thanks to the support given to Pope Urban II, in 1098 he managed to become a Pontifical Legate and to be granted the "Legazia Apostolica", which for many centuries had a lot of importance in Sicily.
