The Nebrodi mountains, otherwise called Caronie, are a mountain range that together with the Madonie and the Peloritani constitute the Sicilian Apennines.
They face north directly on the Tyrrhenian Sea, sometimes almost overhanging; their southern limit is constituted by Etna, from which they are separated by the Alcantara river and the high course of the Simeto.
The reliefs are quite gentle, consisting of extensive banks of clay and sandstone rocks; the highest peaks do not reach 2000 meters.
Monte Soro is the higher: 1847 meters.
The landscape has gentle slopes that become harsher where limestone predominates.
The valley bottoms are crossed by rivers and streams that form gorges.
The waters of the Nebrodi make two large artificial lakes: Lago Ancipa and Lago Pozzillo, as well as other littlest.
The woods that cover these mountains constitute the picturesque Nebrodi Park, where there is also a native pig breed, the famous Nero dei Nebrodi, which lives in the wild.
About the vegetation, the coastal strip is characterized by the Mediterranean scrub with shrubs and some tall trees such as cork and holm oak; in the range up to 1200-1400 meters there are several species of oak.
Above 1400 meters the landscape is characterized by beautiful beech woods.
In the area between Vallone Madonna degli Angeli and Manca li Pini (northern slope of Mount Scalone), all 25 specimens of the Nebrodi Fir are gathered.
Many animal species are present: there are still specimens of porcupine, wild cat, fox, marten and 150 species of birds including the hoopoe, the buzzard, the kestrel, the red kite, the peregrine falcon, the raven, the imperial eagle and the gray heron.
One of the most unique "inhabitants" of the area is the butterfly, present in more than 70 species, some of which are very colorful.
