In the English nautical charts of the 800 is called "the island of rabbits", but the term "rabbit" almost certainly derives from the homonymous Arabic term that means "connection", with reference to the isthmus that connects the island to Lampedusa.
The inhabitants also called it "Isola dei Conigli" because in the 50s the breeding of a colony of rabbits began.
This small island is just a few meters from the west coast of Lampedusa.
It can be reached by walking, or by boat with local fishermen.
The island of rabbits is low and completely rocky; it is an important stopping point for migratory birds that comes here in April and September.
Much of the island is covered by a pine forest.
It is a protected area, part of the natural reserve of the island of Lampedusa.
