Portella della Ginestra has been the scene, on May 1, 1947, of the first massacre of republican Italy.
The bursts of machine guns has shoot for about a quarter of an hour on men, women, children and animals.
Eleven were the victims of that day; the youngest was a girl of only eight years, Vincenza La Fata, and about thirty wounded, although many died after some days.
The massacre took place by the mafia and by the band of Salvatore Giuliano.
Despite the time, many doubts still remain to be clarified on this massacre.
The memorial, by the artist Ettore de Conciliis, is the first work of land art in Italy, realized between 1979 and 1980; consists of numerous inscriptions carved on large local stones, all placed around the "Sasso di Barbato", which indicates the point where the Italian-Albanian socialist Nicola Barbato usually spoke to the people.
A dry wall indicates the direction of shootings.
