Nino Martoglio was born December 3, 1870 in Belpasso; here spent his childhood and youth.
After moving to Catania, he represented his art in numerous theaters and soon, thanks also to the memorable interpretations of Angelo Musco, he established himself all over the world as a director, screenwriter, writer and poet.
Someo of his most famous and still represented works are "L'aria del continente", "Annata ricca, massaru cuntentu", "San Giovanni decollato", transposed for the cinema with interpretation of Totò.
Nino Martoglio was also among the forerunners of Italian cinematography; he directed some masterpieces of silent film, such as "Teresa Raquin" and "Sperduti nel buio".
He died prematurely on September 15, 1921 due to an accidental fall in the trumpet of an elevator of the Vittorio Emanuele hospital in Catania.
