Ancient Noto is located in a hill surrounded by two deep gorges, two "caves" typical of eastern Sicily, which made the site easily defensible.
Only the earthquake of 1693 managed to destroy the impregnable town.
Today in the middle of the Mediterranean vegetation emerge remains of walls and fortifications, architectural pieces of churches of the ancient medieval city.
There are dwellings carved into the rock and remains of the still oldest Greek city.
Ancient Noto was founded at the time of Ducezio.
It became a capital during the Arab era, it was an important city in Sicily and was confederated with two other cities: Messina and Taormina.
Some structures like the Heroon and the gymnasium are still visible from the Greek era.
In the archaeological site you can also admire some Sicilian necropolis of the ninth and eighth centuries BC, the Grotta del Carciofo (Jewish catacomb), the Grotta delle Cento Bocche, the ancient tanneries and mills of the Carosello valley, the remains of the city walls and the castle.
