Vendicari is an Oriented Natural Reserve particularly important due to the presence of different marshes (Pantano Piccolo, Pantano Grande, Roveto and other two minor marshes).
It is a transit station for migratory currents of birds flying from Africa to Europe.
There you can admire a large number of birds, including waders, gray herons, flamingos and many others, most noticeable in the month of December.
The area of Vendicari is 1512 hectares and inside there are also several archaeological settlements.
In Hellenistic age there were an establishment for fish processing, a necropolis and some latomie.
From the Byzantine era, in the area to the south, there were a church, several catacombs and houses.
Other evidences of the man's activity in the area are the swebian tower, built in reality in the Aragonese period, and an eighteenth-century tonnara, which worked until 1943.
In the Pantano Grande there were instead some saltworks dating back to the XVth century.
The coast of the reserve includes both rocky parts and sandy beaches (Eloro, Marianelli, Calamosche, Vendicari and San Lorenzo) and the sea of Vendicari is often rewarded by the blue flags of Legambiente.
Today we discover...
