The Ear of Dionysius is an ancient stone quarry.
It is 65 meters long, 5 to 11 meters wide and 23 meters high, and narrows towards the top, where it ends almost in an acute arc.
Has an S-shaped plant because the excavators followed an old aqueduct, widening the excavation downwards.
On the inside walls there are the signs left by the working of the rock and the detachment of the blocks.
In 1608 this cave was visited by Caravaggio, who baptized it "Orecchio di DIonisio" (Ear of Dionysius) because the shape of its entrance.
This cave has an extraordinary acoustic quality thanks to which the echo is amplified; because of this characteristic, and because the name given to it by Caravaggio, derived the ancient legend according to which the tyrant of Syracuse Dionysius enclosed the prisoners to hear the most faint voices.
