Palazzolo Acreide is a fascinating baroque town with Greek origins.
It has a long history, since the late Bronze Age (12th century BC ), reaches its apogee with the Greek Akrai, founded in 664 BC, then it reaches the peak of its splendor in in the Baroque period, that characterizes its actual face.
Akrai was the first colony founded by Syracuse and had a strategic function for the control of the road for Selinunte.
Many catacombs and hypogea remain of the Paleochristian period.
Gradually depopulated, it was destroyed by the Muslims.
The medieval village developed around the castle, then, in the thirteenth century, the town grew outside the castle walls.
Worth visiting is the Antonino Uccello house-museum, containing an interesting collection of Sicilian ethnographic material.
The churches of San Paolo and San Sebastiano have been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site together with the town center.
Palazzolo Acreide, together with 7 other towns of south-eastern Sicily, has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
