Pantalica is located between canyons digged by the rivers Anapo and Calcinara.
It was inhabited by indigenous pre-Greek populations and developed from the 13th century BC.
The necropolis is the largest in Europe; it has thousands tombs distributed along the rocky walls, used from prehistory to the early Christian era.
It is an UNESCO World Heritage Site awarded for the high profile of history, art, archeology, speleology and landscape.
The Pantalica, Valle dell'Anapo and Torrente Cava Grande Nature Reserve has been established in the area.
As evidence of the protohistoric city remain the vestiges of the Prince's Palace and the vast scenery of the necropolis, but there are also testimonies of the Byzantine era in the remains of dwellings carved into the rock and the remains of the small cave oratories of the Crucifix caves, of San Nicolicchio and of San Micidiario.
The necropolises are divided into: necropolis of Filiporto, necropolis of North-West, necropolis of Cavetta, North necropolis.
A shrubby vegetation predominates.
In the most open environments, the triumph of spring blooms is spectacular.
The area is populated by a large variety of mammals, birds, reptiles and insects.
