The goodness of the sky, the favorable environmental conditions and the high number of nights of observability make the Madonie mountain complex among the best astronomical observation sites in Italy.
This astronomical pole has a world importance.
The "GAL Hassin" is divided into two buildings; one of the largest telescopes in Italy is being installed on Mount Mufara, this will be the highest astronomical site in Italy.
In Contrada Mongerrati, the didactic-informative structure was created, which is also the telescope control center.
The telescope will have a large-field primary mirror that will allow the discovery and detection of potentially dangerous asteroids for our planet and the study of gravitational and neutrino wave sources; it will also allow the discovery of extrasolar planets.
It will be unique in its kind at European level.
There is a digital planetarium, laboratories for scientific research, spaces for teaching activities and a guesthouse.
The quality of the project has prompted the attention of the international astronomical scientific community: the National Institute of Astrophysics INAF, the Italian Space Agency ASI, the European Space Agency ESA, the Action Team on Near-Earth Objects of the UN, the Near-Earth Object Program Office of NASA, Institute of Astronomy and Astrophysics of the Eberhard Karls-Universitat of Tübingen and the Department of Mathematics, Space Mechanics Group of the University of Pisa.
Every year, since 2009, the municipal administration organizes courses and conference cycles held by Italian and foreign astronomers, during which the "GAL Hassin" prize is awarded to personalities who have distinguished themselves in the astronomy research.
