The Madonie park have been included by the UNESCO General Assembly in the list of world geoparks.
An European Geopark is a protected natural area within which geological sites are particularly important from the scientific point of view, has rarity, attractiveness and educational value.
The Geopark of the Madonie includes museums, trails, educational and scientific activities of international importance.
The landscapes of the Madonie mountains are enchanting and unexpected; there are Pizzo Carbonara, 1979 meters height is the second highest summit in Sicily after Etna; it houses the important ski resort of Piano Battaglia.
Pizzo Antenna is the third peak, 1977 meters.
These mountains began to form between 40 and 50 million years ago; previously them were part of the seabed, and this is also demonstrated by the numerous Fossiles found there.
The park is home to over half of the Sicilian plant species, and most of those present only in Sicily.
As well as the faunistic aspect, there are over half of the species of birds, all species of mammals and more than half of the species of Sicilian invertebrates.
You can enjoy the park is possible in different ways: through equipped paths, observation points for birdwatching, excursions on horseback or by mountain bike, by visiting caves or geological sites with fossils, by excursions along the water courses and also cross-country skiing or mountaineering routes.
The high altitude itineraries present greater difficulties and require the support of local guides; those at medium and low altitudes follow the royal Bourbon paths, or the existing paths between villages, farmhouses, mills and country churches.
