With the "Liotru" in the center, the lava stone elephant, symbol of Catania, crossed underground by the Amenano river, whose waters are visible in the "acqua o linzolu" fountain, and surrounded by beautiful buildings by Gianbattista Vaccarini, the architect who was entrusted with the reconstruction of the town after the earthquake of 1693, the Duomo square in Catania is the heart of the town.
Called "one of the most beautiful squares in Italy", elegantly lit at night, and animated by the shouting of the nearby fish market during the day, the Duomo Square has been at the center of town life since ancient times, as evidenced by the presence of the norman Cathedral, and thermal buildings from the roman period in its subsoil.
Taking a tour of the square, we start looking towards the Cathedral dedicated to St Agata, set inside a marble enclosure crowned with statues, with a facade by Vaccarini.
Turning counter-clockwise we meet the Via Vittorio Emanuele; at the top you can see the beautiful dome of the Abbey of St Agata, one of the most successful monuments of Vaccarini.
Crossing the Via Vittorio Emanuele right in the corner of the square there is Via Etnea, the main street of the town, which starts from the Porta Uzeda and elegantly climbs up the hill, giving a view of the garden of the Tondo Gioeni below, and a majestic view of the slopes of Etna at the top.
Continuing to turn, beyond the entrance to Via Etnea there is Palazzo degli Elefanti, a representative creation of Vaccarini, seat of the town hall.
Behind the "Liotru" there is Palazzo Zappalà, Via Garibaldi, closed at the bottom by Porta Garibaldi, and between Palazzo San Martino del Pardo and the beautiful building of the Seminario dei Chierici, again by Vaccarini, the Amenano Fountain, renamed from Catania "Acqua o linzolu".
Beyond the wonderful seminary of the Clerics, the Porta Uzeda and the Diocesan Museum close our tour.
The whole history of Catania, as well as its present, is deeply linked to Duomo square; this place, a must-see destination for any traveler, is a precious jewel that truly deserves the solemn and symbolic surveillance of the "Liotru" Elephant who occupies its central position with its ornaments.
