Porta Messina is located at the northern entrance of the historic center of Taormina and leads directly into the Greco-Roman part of the city.
Corso Umberto, the main street of Taormina, starts from it.
Like Porta Catania, it was part of the system of fortifications built by the Arabs for the defense of the city.
The ancient gate was replaced by a more recent one, the one we admire today was inaugurated in 1808 by Ferdinando IV di Borbone, and in honor of the king it was called Porta Ferdinandea.
