It seems that Prizzi was born thanks to the survivors of the Sican city of Hippana who, in 258 BC, originated the Castle of Prixis.

Various dominations have expanded its importance and gave it an aspect of medieval charm that still retains in its narrow streets, alleys, courtyards and steep stairways.

The town experienced the domination of the Bonello, Villaraut, Del Bosco and Bonanno families.

Located at 1000 meters above sea level, it is one of the highest Municipalities in Sicily.

Every year in Prizzi there are four historical Livestock Fairs: the San Giorgio Fair on April 23rd, the Statute Fair on the first Sunday of June, the Prizzi Fair on September 14th and the Madonna del Soccorso Fair on the third Sunday of October.

The murals embellishing the walls of some houses in the historic center are also worthy of attention; these were commissioned in 1989 by the municipality to the three Sicilian artists Totò Bonanno, Franco Nocera and Mario Bardi.
