Built in 1574 on Mount Suso as a defense against Moor pirate raids, the ancient Angiò dominates the current town Montallegro with its ruins.
Angiò was abandoned since the second half of the 17th century due to the lack of water; the citizens moved to the valley, where they founded the present Montallegro.
The site is the only example in Sicily of a town founded in the 1500s.
Among the ruins the urban structure is currently recognizable, as well as some interesting civil buildings such as the baronial palace, and some churches.
Access is via a long and steep staircase carved into the rock, and the visit offers different emotions among the ruins and the breathtaking view.
