Sambuca di Sicilia was founded by the Arabs on the top of a hillock that was called Sambuca Zabut.
In 1923 it took on its current name.
Sambuca di Sicilia was recognized in 2016 as one of the most beautiful towns in Italy for its artistic, cultural and historical importance, for the harmony of the urban fabric, liveability and services for citizens.
In the upper part of the village there is still the Arab castle of Zabuth.
The Arab origin of Sambuca di Sicilia is still recognizable even in the old Arab neighborhood, a district with an intricate fabric of blind alleys and courtyards that develops around seven "Saracen alleys".
Between the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries the town expanded towards the south-west, and of this period there are some ogival portals, including the fourteenth-century one of the church of the Conception.
Beginning in the 16th century the town was affected by a building renovation that led to the construction of most of the churches, convents, hospital and orphanage.
Corso Umberto was also built.
Around 1850 some bourgeois families had the L'Idea theater built; this was later restored after the 1968 earthquake.
To visit, among other things, also the Mother church, the belvedere and the archaeological museum "Palazzo Panitteri", which exhibits Greek-Punic finds from the nearby archaeological area of Monte Adranone.
Visitors should not miss a tasting of Sambuca di Sicilia DOC wine, exported throughout Italy, Europe, America and Asia.
Among the dairy products, the Vastedda della Valle del Belice PDO stands out, and confectionery production is not to be overlooked.
