About a thousand years ago a lava flow that reached the sea in the area of Ognina came out of the Arsi Mountains.
It did not reach the town of Catania because at that time it had a much smaller extension than the current one.
The flow gave rise to the beautiful lava cliffs that today make up the area of the Catania seafront, and in a particular point, individually, this beautiful arch with a particular shape was created.
In fact, it recalls two kissing figures, and expresses a certain tenderness.
Over time, the imagination of the people of Catania contributed to creating a legend according to which two lovers belonged to families of different social status; she was rich, he was not rich.
When the young man told about his love to the girl's father, he not only did not grant the girl's hand, having already in mind to marry her to someone else from a wealthy family, but replied that he would have married his daughter if after five years would return rich.
The young man left and after five years he returned having really obtained riches, but found the girl already married.
The young man died of pain, and it seems that during his funeral a woman with a covered face approached and kissed him for a long time, and immediately afterwards she died next to him.
After a few days Etna would have liked to immortalize that last kiss by sculpting it among its lavas.
