Sortino is a treasure of history and natural and architectural beauties.
In the past it was called Xuthinum.
It became a feud around the fourteenth century; it was assigned to the Modica family and later to the Eredia family.
In 1477 the latter sold the barony to Guidone Caetano, a Pisan merchant.
The ancient center stood in the valley of the river Ciccio and was composed of houses built on the natural openings of the rocks, to which was added the front part in masonry.
The 1693 earthquake totally destroyed the ancient site.
The present country rose upstream, with the generous help of Pietro Gaetani.
People of Sortino built several churches in baroque style, which still remains the dominant feature of the architectural heritage of Sortino.
The puppets teathre, where the heroic deeds of the French paladins are told, has been part of the Sortino culture for many years.
Do not miss to taste the pizzòlu, a typical dish of rural tradition.
Another typical sortinese product is the 'nfigghiulata, filled with figs and nepeta.
The pride of Sortino is the characteristic hyblean honey of which Virgilio already spoke.
