This is one of the most interesting monuments in Sicily: the Church of Saints Peter and Paul, a jewel of Byzantine, Arab and Norman architecture.
Founded by Basilian monks, it was rebuilt in 1117 and later, after the earthquake of 1169, it was restored in 1172.
The church is the most important monument of the entire valley.
Near the church there was a large monastery, where the Basilian monks took up residence.
The monastery soon became not only a center of religious power but also a judiciary and political center.
For several centuries this place was one of the most important cultural centers of the Messina area.
The work of the monks came to an end towards the end of 1794, when the Basilians abandoned the Agrò valley.
From the architectural point of view, the church of Saints Peter and Paul represents one of the most complex Sicilian monuments: it is a synthesis of elements of Byzantine, Arab and Norman art.
It has sandstone, limestone, lava stone, tuff, cotto , pumice, in red, white and black bricks on the walls and in the arches of the facades forming simple and elegant decorative motifs unique of their kind.
Along the central nave there are two Arabic style domes: one higher and undulating, the other, in the transept area, lower and octagonal.
The temple was consecrated in 1178.
The construction can certainly be considered the point of conclusion of the current of architectural culture defined Basilian.
There are few places like this, where the different souls of the Mediterranean have managed to blend together creating an architectural unicum that still today defies the centuries and arouses wonder and admiration in those lucky enough to visit it.
It looks like a fortified church with the classic orientation of the apse to the east.
Its appearance and the battlements undoubtedly indicate the function of fortress that it had to sustain over the centuries.
