Sutera was founded in the Arab period of Sicily almost to embrace Mount San Paolino, and the medieval imprint has remained in its characteristic alleys, particularly in the Rabato district.

Already the Arab geographer Al Idrisi in the Norman period described it as a village of great importance, populous and industrious.

After all, Sutera was part of the important route belonging to the Comiciana way, a route that connected Agrigento to Palermo, and is also part of the Magna Via Francigena.

The position of Sutera was strategic for the control of a large part of the surrounding territory, so that it was called the "Balcony of Sicily": from here the view can range from the sea to Etna.

after the Normans and the Aragonese it was the territory of Ruggero di Scandolfo, then of the barons Chiaramonte, of the Moncada and again of the king of Sicily.

In 1535 Charles V sold it to Girolamo Bologna, from whom the Sutera inhabitants freed themselves by self-taxing and making the town definitively free in 1560.

In 1905 Sutera was damaged by a landslide detached from Mount San Paolino.

Don't forget to visit, among other things, the living nativity scene that is represented in the Rabato district, the eighteenth-century convent of the Filipino fathers on Mount San Paolino, only reachable on foot, and the church of St Agata, where it is still possible to admire the Sicilian "azolo blue".

The town, rich in traditions, despite the demographic decline in recent years, increased investment in tourism, improving accommodation facilities and enhancing the artistic and landscape beauties, and since December 2013 it has been part of the tourist circuit of "The Most Beautiful Villages of Italy ".
