The temple of Castor and Pollux stood on the middle terrace of the sanctuary of the chthonic deities.
It came to his identification only in 1833; to give due prominence to the event, in 1836 the commission of antiquities in Sicily decided to perform a partial reconstruction of the temple, so three columns were raised, and in 1842, for reasons of stability, a fourth column was added.
For the reconstruction were used pieces found in the area but belonging in reality at different times; thus, for example, lion heads from the Hellenistic period were placed which served as gutters.
Therefore, this restoration work compromised the original aspect of the temple due to the lack of knowledge that the builders had of Greek architecture and therefore was subjected to various criticisms.
Despite this, the temple, with its elegance, has managed to establish itself as a symbol of Agrigento and the whole Sicily.
