In Piazza Dante, in front of the Benedictine Monastery, there are the remains of a Roman-era spa building that testifies to the richness of this area.
Here has been found mosaics and significant features of ancient buildings covered with marbles and refined decorations.
After the main entrance to the monastery you can see the excavation with interesting fragments of ancient Catania history.
This was the summit of the acropolis hill, where significant traces of prehistoric occupation of the site (Neolithic and Copper Age) have been discovered, Greek materials dating back to the 7th century BC, fragments of urban Catania of Roman age and of the historical phases that preceded the 1693 earthquake.
