The centerpiece of the town hall square of Nuova Gibellina is the Civic Tower.
It was designed in 1987 by Alessandro Mendini.
It is twenty meters high and has an irregular cone-shaped part in the center vertically divided into two halves, and is adorned on the top by an iron part that forms two characteristic colored "wings".
The whole tower was conceived as a musical instrument with a large harmonic case, and before it was turned off, at the request of the inhabitants themselves, through a series of loudspeakers it emitted the time signal marked by Sicilian folk songs.
These sounds were derived from the computer processing of typical Sicilian sounds, collected by the Anthropology Institute of the University of Palermo, transformed into "sound dust" (fishermen, street vendors, farmers, religious and pagan songs).
